Who We Are.
NU BonD is a graduate student-led organization whose primary goal is to foster a community built on inclusivity and diversity of thought, ideas, and backgrounds within the Department of Chemistry.
"If the end goal is excellence, diversity is an essential ingredient." - Scientific American
Our Mission.
Because inclusion intentionally values all voices and contributors, in order to truly excel as a community we must promote inclusive excellence through cultural awareness and celebrate the depth and breadth of diversity represented within Northwestern University’s Department of Chemistry. We must cultivate a vision and commitment to diversity and ensure an equitable environment for all members of the department and the chemistry community at large. Achieving inclusive excellence is a long-term commitment and must have a comprehensive, broad approach, embedding appreciation of all members and inclusion best practices into the very fabric of the Chemistry Department’s organizational culture.
Our Initiatives.
1. Implement quarterly workshops and monthly social events open to everyone in the department. The workshops are focused on topics related to social identity, implicit bias, and microagressions, and how they impact science within the chemistry department. The social events are aimed at building community and encouraging conversations surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
2. Implement the Faces of Science seminar series. The goal of this seminar series is to recognize leading scientists both for their science, but also for the non-traditional paths that they’ve taken to get to where they are today. We have specifically chosen scientists who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity. 3. Organize the Northwestern Equitable Application Resource (NEAR) program. This program matches current Northwestern Chemistry graduate students with prospective students to provide assistance preparing graduate school application statements. |
In order to effectively implement inclusive excellence,
we must reform the individual and the institution.
